As the pain threshold varies for different individuals, some men have no pain at all while others have mild aches in the groin (“like being kicked in the nuts or groin”). This pain is due to referred pain from the irritation of the nerves that lie near the vas deferens. On an average, this lasts for about 7 days, with gradual improvement in the pain each day.
There may be some mild swelling in the scrotum.
Taking regular anti-inflammatory medicine, like Panadol and Neurofen, will greatly help in reducing the pain and swelling in the first 48 hours. In addition, ice packs and scrotal support in the form of tight supportive underpants are also helpful
You will only have one small wound after your procedure. A small amount of blood on the dressing is normal. Please contact your doctor if there is excessive bleeding.
It is normal to have some discoloration/ bruising of the skin around the wound for a few days. This will gradually go away.
The scrotal skin heals very easily and in a month’s time you will not be able to see where the incision was made.
Small amount of blood in the semen within the first month or two after a vasectomy is normal and is no cause for concern.
