Frequently Asked Questions:

Vasectomy is a male sterilisation surgery performed on men to prevent them having any more children. It is the safest & most effective method of birth control.

vasectomy is a form of contraceptive that prevents the release of sperm during ejaculation. The procedure involves cutting the vas deferens, the tube that transports sperm from the testicles to the urethra. After a successful vasectomy, sperm will no longer be present in the ejaculate, rendering it unable to result in pregnancy.

It is more reliable, safer, and much cheaper than female sterilisation (tubal ligation) and can be performed under local anaesthetic with minimal discomfort.

A vasectomy stops sperms from being added to your semen or ejaculate. Your semen is made up of various fluids, and other components, including sperms. Sperms are formed in the testes and are carried to the semen via two tubes called the vas deferens. Vasectomy involves blocking these tubes (vas deferens), so that the sperms cannot mix with the semen.

Vasectomy is probably the most effective of all contraception. It is more than 99% effective. The failure rate is less than 1%.

A vasectomy is an incredibly safe and effective procedure.  However, as with any surgery, it can come with risks and side effects which Dr Ayush will discuss with you during the initial consultation.  There are only rare cases of complications and are easily treated.

After a vasectomy, any new sperm produced by the testicles will be reabsorbed by the body rather than getting into the semen. You will not have any symptoms/side effects due to your sperm not getting into the semen.

There are no long-term medical side effects of having a vasectomy.

Your body will still produce the same quality and quantity of male hormone that makes you a man. You will have the same amount of semen.

The only thing that will change is that you will not be able to make your partner pregnant.

Most couples feel that sex becomes more relaxed and enjoyable than before as they are not worried about unplanned pregnancies.

No. A vasectomy does not have any negative impact on your sex life.

Having a vasectomy does not affect your sex drive, ability to have and maintain erections, experience orgasm or ability to ejaculate.

Dr Ayush will first do a pre operative consultation with you, where he will discuss your decision to have the vasectomy, explain the procedure and its complications. He will need to perform a physical examination of your scrotum to make sure it can be done as an out-patient procedure. Your partner is welcome to join you in this appointment.

Thereafter, you can book for the vasectomy at a date and time convenient for you.  It is strongly advised that you plan and book it at a time so that you can take it easy for a week after the procedure.

There are limited waiting times for an appointment. Appointments for the initial consult as well as the procedure are available 5 days a week.

It's important to have a pre-procedure consultation where  you can discuss your decision to have a vasectomy, talk about the procedure and get examined.

This is a chance for you to ask any questions  or raise any concerns. Your partner is welcome to attend this session with you if you wish.

Vasectomies are either open or closed ended, depending on the way the testicular end of the vas deferens is dealt with.

Dr Ayush usually performs a scalpel free open-ended vasectomy, which reduces the risk of post vasectomy syndrome, and has been proven to cause the least discomfort to the patient.

With an open-ended vasectomy, the end of the vas attached to the testicle is left open to avoid the sperms from causing any congestion and pain in the testicle and allowing the sperms to be released in the scrotal fluid from where they are reabsorbed by our body.

An open-ended vasectomy is just as effective as a closed ended vasectomy where both end of the vas deferens are closed.

With a conventional vasectomy, a doctor would make 2 incisions, one on either side of the scrotum. With a scalpel free vasectomy, there is only a single small 2 to 5 mm incision in the middle of the scrotum, through which the entire procedure is performed.  The incision is made by puncturing the scrotal skin with a sharp instrument and gently spread it open.

This results in:

  • Quicker recovery and early return to work.
  • Less bleeding.
  • Less complications
  • Less post-surgical pain

Most men are pleasantly surprised at how quick & painless the procedure is.

Usually, the local anaesthetic injection causes a stinging discomfort that lasts up to 10 seconds. Thereafter, you should not be feeling any pain or discomfort during the procedure. You would be able to get more of the local anaesthetic injection at any stage of the procedure, if you are in any discomfort.

The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

Yes, patients can drive themselves back home straight after the procedure. We strongly advise you to rest for the remainder of your day.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks of bruising, discomfort and infection.

Careful following of aftercare instructions reduces these risks significantly. These risks are generally mild and can be reduced by resting and wearing supportive underpants for a few days after the operation.

You can return to work the very next day on light restrictive duties, and need to avoid physical, exertional activities for a week.

Some bruising, swelling and mild discomfort is normal for the first few days.

You will be provided with aftercare instructions on the day of the procedure.

Dr Ayush Srivastava will be contactable any time after the procedure in case you have any concerns.

Intercourse may be resumed after a week, but contraception should be continued until semen analysis shows that your semen is completely clear of sperms.

You won't be sterile straight away. There will be residual sperms left in the upper part of vas deferens, beyond the vasectomy site.

It usually takes some time following the procedure for all the sperms to clear from your ejaculate. You will need to perform a semen test 3 months from the time of your vasectomy. Please use some alternate method of contraception until it is confirmed that you do not have any live or dead sperms in your semen sample.

Yes, there is a procedure which involves reconnecting the cut and closed ends of the vas deferens from the previous vasectomy.

However, it has a low success rate and is relatively very expensive.

If you have any desire to have children in the future we encourage you to NOT have a vasectomy at this time.

You can start gradually training at the gym after a week.

You can return to running, swimming and cycling after 2 weeks.

You can return to any contact sports after 3-4 weeks.

Local anaesthetic is used, so no fasting is required. You can drive yourself to and from the procedure.

Please trim your hair over pubic area. Include any long hair that can reach the front of the scrotum. Please shave the scrotal area completely so there is no hair in the scrotal area whatsoever.

You will need to shave or have someone else help you shave no more than 24 hours before your procedure.
